Re: Newborn abuse in delivery room
Dear Representative ________ / Senator _____________
I have lived in your district/state for no. of years and vote in every election.
The purpose of this letter is to request your support for an issue that is of great importance to me and to all pregnant women in this country.
The Federal Child abuse legislation in the US since the CAPTA act of 1974 to the Fostering Connections to Success and Increasing Adoptions Act of 2008 is an example for many countries.
There is, however, a large gap in this legislation. The legislation completely ignores the abuse of newborn babies by the childbirth assistance team
It is abundantly clear from the First National U.S. Survey of Women's Childbearing Experiences that the majority of pregnant women in this country are dissatisfied by the care provided in delivery rooms. Mothers complain in particular about abusive newborn manipulation by the assisting team inclusive but not restricted to: Excessive light and noise during the birth process - Premature clamping of the umbilical cord (exposing the newborn to brain damage and anemia) – Undue use of aspiration device – Separation of the newborn from his mother – Rubbing of the newborn to “clean” it.
With our silence we are all complicit in child abuse.
We look forward to having you completing the US child abuse legislation by supporting additional laws banishing newborn abuse in the delivery room, thus suppressing its documented negative effect on later life.
I would greatly appreciate your consideration and action on the above issue. I feel certain that upon reflection they will be just as important to you. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. Most Sincerely,
