OVERWEIGHT and OBESITY                        (edited July, 2008, upgraded: March, 2010)

Overweight and obesity are the external marks of an excessive food intake and storage.

IT TAKES TIME

Overweight and obesity do not occur overnight. Overweight and obesity are the consequence of months and years of excessive food intake and storage. The excessive food intake is stimulated by a diet containing too much sugar, starch and food additives and deprived of essential nutrients.

EXCESS SUGAR AND STARCH

Excessive sugar and starch maintains a higher than normal blood sugar level (Hyperglycemia for the health professional) that causes insulin to be released by the pancreas in greater quantity than needed for health support.

THE ROLE OF INSULIN

Insulin—the storage hormone, stores the excess of calories as fat. Excess of insulin does it faster. Too much insulin also modifies the release and the utilization of other hormones.

THYROID HORMONE

An example of this is the reduction of utilization of thyroid hormone (the consumption hormone) with as consequence fatigue and lack of energy, a frequent complaint in overweight and obese people.

OVARIES and BREAST

Another example of hormone imbalance in overweight and obese women is the change occurring in their ovarian hormone production and resulting in sterility by lack of ovulation, in facial and body hair growth, in cysts of the ovaries (PolyCystic Ovary Syndrome or PCOS) and breast enlargement.

ADRENALS

Still another example of the hormonal imbalance that may result from a sustained high insulin level is—in both genders, the greater production of adrenal hormones contributing to hypertension and, with time contributing to a gradual modification of the general physical appearance..

HEART and KIDNEY FAILURE, STROKE, ARTERIOSCLEROSIS, NEUROPATHY

Furthermore overweight and obese people are prone to develop heart and renal failure and stroke. They also have higher cholesterol and triglycerides. Overweight and obesity accelerate arterial damage (arteriosclerosis) and deteriorate nerve function (neuropathy).

TUMORS and CANCER

Overweight and obese people have an increased risk of tumors and cancer.

DIABETES

Until recently this cluster of health deterioration was considered a consequence of diabetes only. This is no longer admitted. It is now well established that—with time and their genetic configuration permitting, people with hyperglycemia soon or later may also become diabetic. It is, however, also evident that they don’t have to wait until sugar appears in their urine and they are labeled "diabetic" to share the misery of that condition.

They are already fully exposed to it.

THE ROLE OF FOOD ADDITIVES

Food Additives are present in ALL processed food. Most additives are toxic. On top of it some additives are also addictive. Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is a good example of a toxic and addictive additive. MSG is used to create obese laboratory animals because MSG makes them eat more!

THE ROLE OF ESSENTIAL NUTRIENTS

The scarcity of some nutrients in the diet increases appetite. Among them minerals like chromium and vanadium and the long chain essential fatty acids EPA and DHA.

The Recommendations of the Longevity Institute

From a nutritional standpoint, overweight and obese people should consider to:

1- To have a good breakfast (proteins: eggs, meat), a light lunch, a snack in late afternoon and skip the dinner. Drink plenty of water. The morning food intake most likely can be used during the day while an evening meal main destination is storage.

2 - To ban sugar and reduce the consumption of starch and food with a high glycemic index.

3 - To reduce the intake of food high in n-6 essential fatty acids (n-6 EFAs), and increase the intake of food high in n-3 essential fatty acids (n-3 EFAs)., particularly the intake of the long  chain n-3 EFAs eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). More info

4– To avoid food additives. To stay away from processed food for its additive content. Food additives disrupt the insulin and leptin balance monitoring appetite and favor weight gain..

5 -  To eat more fresh vegetables and fruits.

6 - To supplement their diet with:

a) a good source of minerals and vitamins.

b) long chain omega-3 essential fatty acids..

c) digestive enzymes.

d) anti-oxidants

More Information

Should following the above recommendations not help you lose weight it could be related to a hormonal imbalance termed "Estrogen Dominance“. Estrogen Dominance opposes weight loss and the condition exist in both genders. Read more about: Estrogen Dominance in women and about Estrogen Dominance in men.
